Food Rules Day 8 Meatless Monday

Meatless Monday & The Social Environment

Today's Rule: No meat all day, focusing on high plant-based proteins.

Your Action Plan:

  • Focus On: Lentils, chickpeas, black beans, quinoa, edamame, and hearty greens.
  • Avoid: Beef, chicken, pork, fish, and heavy dairy.

The Lesson:  Your social environment, including family and friends, affects your eating habits. Identify common goals with your household, like building a healthy home where everyone feels better. Don't be afraid to ask for support, such as asking a family member to help keep you on track. Sometimes, you have to be the grownup and refuse to support unhealthy eating habits for the ones you love.

Mindful Habit Challenge:  Shift a social activity today; instead of eating out, invite family or friends for a walk, a hike, or play outside.

The Science: The American Gut Project, one of the largest studies on human microbiomes, found that individuals who consume 30 or more different types of plants per week have profoundly more diverse and robust gut biomes than those who consume 10 or fewer. Plant fibers produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like butyrate, which act as a powerful anti-inflammatory for your gut lining and keep connective tissues and fascia supple.

Think of your gut microbiome like a rainforest. If you only plant one type of tree, the ecosystem becomes fragile and vulnerable to disease. Plant proteins and fibers introduce new "species" to the rainforest, making the terrain bulletproof. Today is about planting new trees.

Coach Ryan's Note

Diversifying the Microbiome When you eat meat every day, you are feeding a very specific set of bacteria in your gut. But your gut microbiome requires massive diversity to protect your immune system and regulate inflammation.
