Food Rules Day 27 Mindful Chewing . The First Stage of Digestion
Mindful Chewing
The First Stage of Digestion
The Lesson: Digestion Starts in the Mouth
We force mindful eating because swallowing your food whole destroys your gut's ability to extract nutrients.
The Science: Digestion is both mechanical (chewing) and chemical (enzymes). Your saliva contains amylase, an enzyme specifically designed to begin breaking down carbohydrates before they ever hit your stomach. If you inhale your food, the stomach has to overproduce acid to make up for the lack of mechanical breakdown, leading to acid reflux, bloating, and gas.
The Analogy: Your stomach does not have teeth. Sending unchewed food down the pipe is like expecting a paper shredder to process an entire hardcover book at once. It jams the machine. Chew your food until it’s a paste.
