Food Rules Day 22 The Danger of Liquid Sugar

The Danger of Liquid Sugar

The Lesson: The Fructose Trap

Not all sugars are metabolized the same way. High-fructose corn syrup and liquid sugars bypass your body's natural satiety signals and go straight to the liver.

The Science: When you eat glucose (like from a potato), every cell in your body can use it for fuel. But fructose can only be metabolized by the liver. When you consume high-fructose corn syrup, your liver is overwhelmed and undergoes de novo lipogenesis—literally converting the excess sugar directly into visceral fat around your organs.

The Analogy: Liquid sugar is a Trojan Horse. Because it doesn't require chewing and lacks fiber, it sneaks past your body's "fullness" guards. Before your brain even realizes you've consumed calories, the enemy is already inside the gates, storing fat in your liver.
