Food Rules Day 12 Fresh Food Friday
Fresh Food Friday & Dodging Trick Foods
Today's Rule: NOTHING FROM A BOX, CAN, OR PACKAGE.
Your Action Plan:
The Lesson: Trick foods seem healthy but aren't; they are full of sugar and chemicals. Items like sweetened yogurt, granola bars, fruit juice, and "organic" cookies are trick foods. When in doubt, ask yourself: does it come in a plastic package, does it have more than a couple of ingredients, and can you pronounce them?
Mindful Habit Challenge: Read the label of any condiment or sauce you use today. If it has unpronounceable ingredients or added sugar, do not eat it.
The Science: A landmark National Institutes of Health (NIH) study by Dr. Kevin Hall showed that individuals on ultra-processed diets naturally consumed roughly 500 more calories a day than those on whole-food diets, even when the meals were matched for carbs, fat, and protein. Why? Whole foods have a robust "food matrix" that requires a high Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). Your body literally burns calories just trying to break down the cellular walls of real food.
Eating processed, boxed food is like having someone else pre-chew your meals. The factory already did the digesting for you, so 100% of the energy goes straight into your system (and often to your fat stores). Whole foods force your digestive system to work for the energy, turning your metabolism into a furnace.
Coach Ryan's Note
The Matrix Effect of Whole Foods A calorie is not just a calorie. The physical structure of the food you eat dictates how much energy your body can extract from it.
